The Birthday of the World

In the beginning, there was only the holy darkness. The source of life. And then in the course of history, at a moment in time, this world, the world of a thousand thousand things, emerged from the heart of the holy darkness as a Great Ray of Light. The vessel containing the wholeness of the world broke and shattered into a thousand thousand pieces of light fragments, and fell deep within all events and all people who have been, who are, and who will be – where these fragments remain deeply hidden until this very day. (more…)

The whole human race is a response to this accident. We are here because we are born with a capacity to find the hidden light in all events, things, and all people. We have the ability to say hello to these fragments, to shake them free from their unconsciousness and to make these fragments of light – these pieces of the outcome of the holy darkness, visible once again, and thereby restore the innate wholeness of the world.

This task is the restoration in the holiest of holies, and it is our task. It is collective in nature, but independent in practice. It is not about healing the world by making a huge difference, it is about healing the world of your proximity by finding the hidden light, the hidden truth, the hidden wholeness in everything around you. For some, the scale is small, it is a gesture or a glance, a simple hello. For some it is large, visible to thousands and thousands. Do not judge the scale of others or yourself, focus only on your own intent.

This is our power as beings. It is our purpose. It is our meaning. We are each enough to make a difference in this way. We are exactly what is needed. We are not the problem. There is no enemy. How would you live if you knew, in your heart, that you – as you are right now – are exactly what the world needs? That what you want deep in your being is what the world wants too? What would you create for yourself? What would you create to share with others?

Science defines life in a certain way, with facts and observations. Science believes it can cure all ills. But it turns out, science can only cure a small amount of human suffering; what remains must be healed, which is different. The act of healing is the discovery of this light within something or someone. Life is larger than science. It is filled with mystery, courage, heroism, love – all things we can witness and know, but we cannot (and will not ever) measure and understand.

The facts, like science and its empirical understanding of the world, are always the bones of the story; the framework upon which everything else hangs. But they do not describe the journey through the story. When we reflect on events, when we share our experiences with each other, we reflect on our stories, not on the facts. Do not let the facts get in the way of you finding the thousands of thousands of pieces of light all around you. Allow the facts to be the frame through which you observe the art of the story unfolding around you.

Do not get distracted by the stories that other people tell you about yourself. Create the life you wish to live; the things that fire your inner passion. Commit yourself to what is important to you, whatever that may be – be it art, healing, commerce, whatever. Be of service to your fellow men in act and deed, if it is your calling, but do not be in judgement of those who are not – it is not their calling, and they simply see fragments of light in places you cannot – just as you see fragments they cannot. Trust who you are, and what you aspire to. Touch the lives of people around you in this deep way each day, lifting up and valuing the piece of the holiest of holies buried within.

Our loss of wholeness is not the end of the story, it is the story itself. There is no problem to be solved, and truthfully, without it we would not be. It has created for us, on a spiritual level, purpose of being. It is the great work. What will be at the end of this journey (upon which we have set out to restore wholeness) will be different, greater, more dynamic than what we began with (begat from). Wholeness includes all of our wounds and vulnerabilities and because of that, there is no error in your wounds, vulnerabilities, desires or needs. We must forgive this of ourselves and of the world. This is our journey, it is our story. To wish it away would be to wish ourselves away. We willed it to be exactly as it is. It is our purpose. This is your purpose.

This is your purpose. It is our purpose.

(Paraphrased from the Hebrew story of The Birthday of the World, as told to me by Dr. Rachel Naomi Remen)
